Best Fuel-Efficient AWD Cars for Western NY Winters
2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV
Starting at $34,995 MSRP / Range – 319 miles / Combined MPGe – 103 (with optional AWD)
The Equinox EV is, as the name suggests, an electric version of Chevrolet’s best-selling SUV, the Equinox. It comes with standard front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is available on every trim level. In terms of miles of range for your dollar, the Equinox EV is an outstanding value. This is important because a lot of people are apprehensive about driving an EV in the winter, as range can be impacted by the kind of extreme cold we get in Western New York. While the impact of cold on EVs is roughly equal to the impact of cold on fuel efficiency in gasoline vehicles, it can still make some people apprehensive. So an EV with over 300 miles of range is a great way to handle the cold without using a single drop of gasoline.
2026 Cadillac CT4
Starting at $36,000 MSRP / Fuel Economy (2.0-liter / AWD) – 21 MPG city / 31 MPG highway / 25 MPG combined
While a lot of people generally associate SUVs with good performance in the snow, most SUVs today are built on sedan platforms and simply have a taller body, so there’s no mechanical reason why a sedan can’t be just as good. And when you’re looking to improve fuel economy without sacrificing winter performance, a sedan is certainly the way to go. The CT4 is an exceptionally good sedan as well, with a luxurious interior and excellent performance. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but opting for the available all-wheel drive has very little impact on fuel economy, which isn’t something you can say about very many vehicles. Even opting for the more powerful available V6 won’t have you needing to refuel much more frequently. For a vehicle that handles winter well, sips fuel, and is a lot of fun to drive, the CT4 is an excellent choice.
